Manchester City finished eighth, continuing their rise up the Premier League table. Newcastle United finished fifth, thanks to the goals of Alan Shearer, while Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers impressed with their performances under Graeme Souness and Sam Allardyce respectively.
