Premier League Table 2003/04: A Season to Remember
The 2003/04 Premier League season was one of the most thrilling and unpredictable in its history. With multiple twists and turns, the title race went down to the wire, while the battle for relegation was equally intense.
Title Race
Arsenal entered the season as favorites, having won the previous two titles. However, their dominance was challenged by Chelsea, led by the charismatic Jose Mourinho in his first season in English football.
Chelsea started the campaign strongly and were top of the table for much of the season. Arsenal, on the other hand, struggled with injuries and loss of form. The title race took a dramatic turn in April when Chelsea lost at home to Manchester United, allowing Arsenal to close the gap.
With three games remaining, Arsenal and Chelsea were level on points. The Gunners faced Everton at Highbury, knowing that a win would secure the title. Despite going down to ten men, Arsenal rallied to win 2-1, securing their third consecutive Premier League trophy.
Relegation Battle
At the other end of the table, the relegation battle was equally intense. Leicester City, Portsmouth, and Wolves were all involved in a desperate struggle to avoid the drop.
Leicester City were rooted to the bottom of the table for much of the season. However, a late surge saw them win three of their last four games, including a crucial victory over fellow strugglers Portsmouth.
Portsmouth, under the guidance of Harry Redknapp, also staged a remarkable escape. They won their last five games to finish 16th, leaving Wolves and Leicester City to occupy the bottom two places.
