Who's in, Who's Out, and Who's on Top: A Round-up of the Premier League's First Week
The Premier League is back with a bang, and the first weekend of the 2023/24 season has already thrown up plenty of drama. Here's a round-up of who's in, who's out, and who's on top after the opening fixtures:
Who's In?
Manchester City started the season as they mean to go on, with a comfortable 3-0 win over Brighton. Erling Haaland made his Premier League debut and scored a brace, while Kevin De Bruyne added the other.
Arsenal also got off to a winning start, beating Crystal Palace 2-0. New signing Gabriel Jesus impressed, scoring the Gunners' second goal.
Who's Out?
Manchester United had a disappointing start to the season, losing 2-1 at home to Brighton. New manager Erik ten Hag will have plenty to work on, with his team looking disjointed and lacking in confidence.
Liverpool also struggled in their opening game, drawing 2-2 with Fulham. The Reds were twice behind and had to come from behind to salvage a point.
Who's on Top?
Manchester City sit top of the table after the first weekend, with three points and a positive goal difference.
Arsenal are second, also with three points but an inferior goal difference.
Who Won First?
Fulham won the first match of the Premier League season, beating Liverpool 2-2.
Who Won the First Title?
The first Premier League title was won by Manchester United in the 1992/93 season.
Why No Premier League This Weekend (September 2023)?
There is no Premier League this weekend (September 2023) due to the international break. England are playing Italy and Germany in the UEFA Nations League, while other nations have their own fixtures.
