Premier League 2011: A Season of Ups and Downs

The 2011 Premier League season kicked off with a bang, as newly promoted Swansea City upset defending champions Chelsea in the opening match. The season was marked by a number of surprises, as well as some disappointing results from some of the league's biggest clubs.

One of the biggest stories of the season was the emergence of Manchester City as a major force in the league. The club, which had been purchased by Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008, spent heavily on new players and quickly became one of the most exciting teams to watch in the league. Led by Sergio Aguero, Mario Balotelli, and David Silva, City scored goals for fun and quickly became the favorites to win the title.

Another surprise package of the season was Tottenham Hotspur. The club, which had finished fourth the previous season, continued to impress under the leadership of Harry Redknapp. Led by Gareth Bale, Luka Modric, and Rafael van der Vaart, Tottenham played an attractive brand of football and finished the season in fourth place.

At the other end of the table, there were a number of disappointing results. Chelsea, the defending champions, struggled to find their form and finished the season in sixth place. Arsenal, another one of the league's big clubs, also had a disappointing season, finishing third.

The title race went down to the final day of the season, with Manchester City and Manchester United both in contention. In the end, it was City who emerged victorious, winning the title by a single point. It was the club's first league title since 1968.
