Premier League Table 2013/14: A Thrilling Title Race and Surprises Galore
The 2013/14 Premier League season was one of the most unpredictable and exciting in recent memory. The title race went down to the wire, with Manchester City and Liverpool battling it out until the very end. There were also plenty of surprises, with newly promoted teams impressing and established clubs struggling.
Manchester City Crowned Champions
Manchester City secured the Premier League title in dramatic fashion on the final day of the season. Manuel Pellegrini's side needed to beat West Ham United and hope that Liverpool dropped points against Newcastle United. City did their part, winning 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium, while Liverpool suffered a shock 3-1 defeat at St. James' Park.
The title was City's second in three years and their fourth overall. It was also a fitting reward for Sergio Aguero, who scored 28 goals in the league and was named the PFA Player of the Year.
Liverpool's Heartbreak
Liverpool came agonizingly close to winning their first Premier League title in 24 years. Brendan Rodgers' side led the table for much of the season, but they ultimately fell short in the final stretch.
Liverpool's title hopes were effectively ended on the penultimate weekend of the season, when they drew 3-3 with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. City, meanwhile, took full advantage of their slip-up by beating Arsenal 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium.
Despite their disappointment, Liverpool's players and fans can take heart from the progress they made under Rodgers. The Reds played some of the most exciting football in the Premier League and they will be back to challenge for the title next season.
Chelsea Secure Third Place
Chelsea finished third in the table, 12 points behind Manchester City. Jose Mourinho's side struggled for consistency throughout the season, but they managed to secure a Champions League place with a 6-3 aggregate victory over Schalke in the semi-finals.
Chelsea's season was overshadowed by the controversy surrounding Diego Costa. The Spain international was involved in a number of incidents on and off the pitch, and he was eventually banned for three games for violent conduct.
Arsenal Miss Out on Champions League
Arsenal finished fourth in the table, missing out on a place in the Champions League for the first time in 16 years. Arsene Wenger's side paid the price for a poor start to the season, which saw them lose three of their first six matches.
Arsenal also struggled with injuries throughout the campaign, with Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil, and Laurent Koscielny all spending time on the sidelines. The Gunners will be hoping for a better season in 2014/15, when they will be led by new signing Alexis Sanchez.
Manchester United's Struggles Continue
Manchester United endured a disappointing season, finishing seventh in the table. David Moyes was sacked as manager in April, after a run of poor results, and he was replaced by Louis van Gaal.
United's season was characterized by a lack of consistency. They were capable of beating the top teams, but they also struggled against weaker opposition. The Red Devils will be hoping for a better season under Van Gaal, but they will need to strengthen their squad in the summer transfer window.
Surprises of the Season
There were plenty of surprises in the 2013/14 Premier League season. Newly promoted Leicester City finished ninth in the table, while Crystal Palace, Southampton, and West Ham United all impressed.
Leicester City's success was particularly remarkable. The Foxes had been tipped for relegation, but they surprised everyone by finishing in the top half of the table. Their success was due in no small part to the goals of Jamie Vardy, who scored 16 goals in the league.
Crystal Palace, Southampton, and West Ham United also enjoyed impressive seasons. Palace finished 11th in the table, Southampton finished eighth, and West Ham United finished 13th. All three teams played attractive football and they will be hoping to continue their progress next season.
The Relegated Teams
Norwich City, Fulham, and Cardiff City were relegated to the Championship at the end of the season. Norwich and Fulham had both been in the Premier League for several years, but they struggled to adapt to the demands of the top flight. Cardiff, meanwhile, were relegated after just one season in the Premier League.
The relegated teams will be hoping to bounce back to the Premier League next season. Norwich and Fulham have both appointed new managers, while Cardiff have retained Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Looking Ahead to 2014/15
The 2014/15 Premier League season is set to be another thrilling one. Manchester City and Liverpool will be the favorites to challenge for the title, but there will be plenty of other teams hoping to make a surprise.
Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United will all be looking to bounce back from disappointing seasons, while the newly promoted teams will be hoping to establish themselves in the Premier League. The 2014/15 Premier League season promises to be one of the most exciting in years.
