Chelsea began the season as favorites, having won the league the previous year. They started the season strongly, winning their first five games. This allowed Manchester City to close the gap, and the two teams were level on points at the top of the table at the end of December.
Chelsea regained their form in the new year, and they won eight of their next nine games. This gave them a five-point lead over Manchester City, and they looked set to cruise to the title. However, Manchester City refused to give up, and they won their last seven games of the season. This meant that Chelsea needed to win their final game of the season, away to Crystal Palace, to secure the title.
